Since 2017 #TeamThriving has been delivering an innovative exercise program for young people undergoing residential rehabilitation for drug and/or drug addiction. Our Thriving-DAYS initiative was recognised at the 2018 WA Alcohol and Other Drug Excellence Awards for the significant contribution it was making to preventing and reducing alcohol and drug harms in young people.
Supported by a CommBank Community Grant, and delivered in partnership with Mission Australia, Next Step Drug and Alcohol Services and the University of Western Australia’s School of Human Sciences, this initiative is using regular structured exercise as a vital step in assisting young people recovering from serious issues related to long term drug and alcohol misuse.
Alongside delivery of the service the team are also engaged in research evaluation and the translation of knowledge to increase the understanding of exercise within this unique and vulnerable group. Given the positive impacts so far, hopefully one day we will see exercise embedded as a key part of treatment for all young people.
A recent research publication from the team was recently featured by Exercise & Sport Science Australia's Move Magazine. To read more ... CLICK HERE!
