This 2-part course aims to extend participants understanding of paediatric exercise rehabilitation from physical literacy in young people to exercise prescription in clinical populations.

  • Module 1: online webinars covering topics from physical literacy, principles of working with young people and exercise adaptations. The online content is a pre-requisite for the face-to-face workshop. 

 

  • Module 2: Live webinars and workshops focusing on practical applications and clinical knowledge related to physical literacy and paediatric assessments (e.g. motor skills, neuromuscular performance, body composition, aerobic fitness) for typically developing and clinical paediatric populations.  

Foundations of Physical Literacy

& Exercise Adaptations in Young People (Module 1)

This course aims to extend participants understanding of the role and impact of different types of exercise in young people (5-18yrs), and how to adapt exercise programs for young people.

 

This online course is designed for allied health and exercise professionals currently working, or wanting to work, with children and young people across exercise programs and/or rehabilitation.

Module include:

  • Physical Literacy & Activity in Young People

  • Role and Influence of Parent/Guardian

  • Cognitive Function & Mental Health

  • Exercise Adaptations in Young People 

Considerations when working with young people will also be discussed along with exercise adaptations in young people and age-related variations including aerobic, strength training, and motor skills training. 

Participants will be required to demonstrate their learning through online quizzes relating to the above topics

Physical Literacy & Therapeutic Exercise

in Young People (Module 2)

This course aims to extend participants understanding of paediatric exercise rehabilitation from physical literacy in young people to exercise prescription in clinical populations.


This course is delivered in two parts; Module 1 (above) and Module 2 via webinars and live workshops. Completion of Module 1 is required before enrolling in Module 2.

 

The webinars and live workshops will include practical applications and clinical knowledge related to physical literacy and paediatric assessments (e.g. motor skills, neuromuscular performance, body composition, aerobic fitness) for typically developing and clinical paediatric populations.  
 

Pathologies and impairments discussed include:

  • obesity

  • hypermobility syndromes (e.g. EDS, JIA),

  • mental health disorders (e.g. anxiety and depression) 

  • cancer

  • respiratory conditions (e.g. asthma, CF), and 

  • neurodevelopmental conditions (e.g. Autism, ADHD, DCD).

 

Focusing on clinical paediatric populations there will be theoretical, practical and key considerations for an AES/AEP or exercise therapists working with children and adolescents across a range of clinical groups.  
 
A large educational focus is on the application of exercise expertise to support exercise participation in young people who experience difficulties or barriers, including medical, behavioural or psychosocial challenges, to participation at school or community level.
